Project Description

RDM has been performing pavement surveys on airside pavements at DCA since 2002. The scope of work has remained generally the same and RDM has tracked the condition of these pavements since our initial contract with the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA). This is an update to a Pavement Management survey performed by RDM in 2016. RDM inspected over 9.5 million square feet of pavement.

As in the past, all survey and testing work had to be completed during time hours, from roughly 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. to avoid negative impacts or delays to air traffic.  In addition to the standard pavement survey, RDM provided 100% distress survey mapping on Runways 1/19 and 15/33 as part of this project.

PCN values were calculated for each runway and several taxiways as part of the program.  RDM provided a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) study to identify and locate abandoned underground fuel lines as part of the project.  RDM provided airport staff with training on the PAVER and GIS software, as well as Pavement Distress Recognition.
